Book Review: 13 Reasons Why by Jay Asher
“I hope you're ready because I'm about to tell you the story of my life. More specifically, why my life ended. And if you're listening to these tapes, you're one of the reasons why.”
so basically the plot is our dude(Clay Jensen) returns from school to find a mysterious box with his name on it lying on his porch. inside he discovered thirteen cassette tapes recorded by Dead girl Hanna Bakar, his classmate who had committed suicide two weeks earlier. basically, those tapes were like journals of Hanna were she justifies her reason to consider suicide and she made the tapes in same order how her friend and classmates betrayed her.
I consider first few reasons where consist of high school bullying, then it shifted real dark when stuff like physical abuse, accidental murder and Rapes popped up.
I do want to say I don't think this is 100% the best book in the world for depression/suicide, I actually think this one is for the outside audience that hasn’t been affected by suicide yet. The author has done a great job narrating on how suicide impacts those affected, considering suicide is never a singular action.
This book made justice with clay, which I had expected… trust me I was really glad knowing the reason why Clay was on the tape.
I simply HAD to know exactly what drove Hannah over the edge. I wanted to know her story, to get an idea what made her feel so depressed and alone. I read in quite some reviews that people thought her reasons to commit suicide were shallow. I don’t agree with that at all. They were her reasons and nobody else’s, I don’t think we always have big reasons to make the decision we choose sometimes little stuff do add up to make a strong opinion.
Overall, I really enjoyed the HOURS it took me to devour this book. It was a great experience and I'm glad I read it! few quotes from the book:
“You can hear rumours. But you can't know them.”
“After all, how often do we get a second chance?”
“A lot of you cared, just not enough.”
“I’m sorry.” Once again, those were the words. And now, anytime someone says I’m sorry, I’m going to think of her.”
“Fun drunks make a nice addition to any party. Not looking to fight. Not looking to score. Just looking to get drunk and laugh.”
I had heard very mixed things for some time and it seemed a lot of readers were very divided on this book, but I personally really liked it.
I will wrap this up by letting you all know to expect this story to make you sad and touch you deeply because, after all, it is a story about missed opportunities, about a life ending much too soon, about guilt and grief.
“because I heard so many stories that I don’t know which one is the most popular. But I know which is least popular. The truth. Now, the truth is the one you won’t forget."
